Terminal Junction Box Selection for Cable Connections and Equipment Housing

A terminal junction box is a weatherproof enclosure that provides a protected space for electrical connections, whether simple cable-to-cable terminations, multi-cable distribution through terminal blocks, or housing for small control devices such as relays, timers and network switches. The IP65 or IP67 rating protects the internal connections from water, dust and mechanical damage, making the junction box suitable for outdoor installation and indoor wet or dusty areas. UKW6 Terminal Junction Box Series Technical Specifications

Enclosure Material Selection: ABS vs Polycarbonate

The UKW6 ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) version provides a good balance of mechanical strength, chemical resistance and cost for general indoor and sheltered outdoor applications. It has an impact resistance of IK07 (2 Joules) and a continuous operating temperature range of minus 25 to plus 60 degrees Celsius. The polycarbonate version provides superior impact resistance (IK08, 5 Joules), wider temperature range (minus 40 to plus 80 degrees Celsius), and better UV resistance (retains 90 percent of mechanical properties after 2000 hours of QUV accelerated weathering). Polycarbonate is recommended for: outdoor installations in direct sunlight, environments with risk of mechanical impact (forklift traffic, falling objects), locations with extreme temperature cycling, and applications requiring transparency (the polycarbonate cover is available in clear for visual inspection of internal components without opening the enclosure).

IP Protection Level: IP65 vs IP67

IP65 (dust-tight, protected against water jets) is suitable for most outdoor and industrial applications where the enclosure is mounted on a wall or structure and not subject to immersion. IP67 (dust-tight, protected against temporary immersion in water up to 1 meter depth for 30 minutes) provides an additional level of protection for installations where temporary flooding is possible: cable trenches, basement walls, outdoor ground-level mounting. The IP67 UKW6 uses a silicone foam gasket with a higher compression ratio and additional cover screws for increased sealing force. The cable entry glands must also be IP68 rated to maintain the overall enclosure IP rating. Note that IP67 does not imply the enclosure is suitable for continuous immersion; for underwater applications, a specialized submersible enclosure is required.

Cable Entry and Internal Mounting

The UKW6 enclosure base has pre-marked knockout positions on all four sides and the bottom face for cable entry. The knockouts are sized for standard metric cable glands: M12, M16, M20, M25, M32 and M40, with the specific knockout pattern depending on the enclosure size. The knockouts are removed using a screwdriver or knockout punch; alternatively, the gland holes can be drilled to size if a non-standard gland is required. Inside the enclosure, molded bosses with pre-drilled holes accept self-tapping screws for mounting a DIN-rail, a terminal block mounting plate or a metal backplate. The enclosure base includes external mounting lugs with pre-drilled holes for wall or surface mounting, and the lugs are positioned outside the enclosure seal area so that mounting does not compromise the IP rating.

Condensation Management and Venting

All sealed enclosures are subject to internal condensation as the internal air temperature and humidity change with the external ambient conditions. The UKW6 addresses this with an optional pressure equalization vent (Gore-Tex membrane) that allows air and water vapor to pass while blocking liquid water and dust. The vent equalizes the internal and external pressure, reducing the thermal pumping effect that draws moist air into the enclosure through imperfect seals. For enclosures in high-humidity environments, a desiccant pack can be placed inside the enclosure to absorb moisture, with the desiccant replaced during periodic maintenance. For enclosures that will be opened frequently, the vent is strongly recommended to reduce the time required for internal condensation to clear after the cover is replaced.
