Waterproof Socket Selection for Outdoor Industrial Power

A waterproof socket outlet provides an IEC 60309 standard power connection point in an IP66 weatherproof enclosure, suitable for outdoor and wet-area applications where a standard indoor socket would not be adequately protected. Unlike a combination switched socket, a waterproof socket does not include an integral switch, making it suitable for circuits where the isolation point is elsewhere (for example, at the distribution board). The angled socket face design directs the cable downward, minimizing water ingress along the cable and reducing strain on the plug and cable. UKW3 Waterproof Socket Series Technical Specifications

IEC 60309 Socket Compatibility and Rating

The UKW3 socket conforms to IEC 60309-2, accepting standard industrial plugs in the matching current rating and voltage color code. The socket is available in blue (230V) and red (400V) with the standard 6h earth pin position for 50/60 Hz systems. The socket contacts are brass with a silver flash plating for low contact resistance and corrosion resistance. The contact spring system is designed to maintain the specified contact force (minimum 3 Newtons for 16A, 5 Newtons for 32A, 10 Newtons for 63A) throughout the socket’s rated mating cycles (5000 operations). The socket IP rating is IP66 when a correctly rated plug is fully inserted, with the plug-to-socket interface forming a labyrinth seal that prevents water ingress along the plug body.

Angled Socket Face and Cable Management

The UKW3 socket face is angled downward at approximately 20 degrees from the vertical, directing the connected cable downward and outward from the enclosure. This angle provides three benefits: water running down the cable jacket drips off at the lowest point rather than pooling at the plug-to-socket interface; the cable exits the socket with a gentle bend radius that minimizes strain on the plug contacts and cable conductors; and the enclosure cover can be partially closed over an inserted plug in some models, providing additional weather protection while the socket is in use. The socket is mounted in the enclosure with the contact tubes oriented slightly downward, so that any condensation inside the enclosure drains away from the contact area.

Cover Sealing and Weather Protection

The UKW3 enclosure cover is hinged at the top and closes against a silicone foam gasket around the enclosure opening. When closed (no plug inserted), the cover maintains the IP66 rating, and a captive screw secures the cover in the closed position. The cover can also be padlocked closed for security. When a plug is inserted, the cover rests against the plug body and provides partial weather protection from above. The enclosure includes a Gore-Tex pressure equalization vent that allows air pressure equalization as the enclosure heats and cools, preventing the thermal pumping effect that draws moist air into the enclosure through imperfect seals. The cable entry glands on the enclosure bottom face are IP68 rated when correctly tightened onto the supply cable.

Installation and Mounting Versatility

The UKW3 enclosure includes integral mounting lugs with pre-drilled holes for M6 or M8 fixings, suitable for wall, post, bollard or equipment frame mounting. The enclosure can be mounted in any orientation, though the recommended orientation is with the cable glands at the bottom to prevent water ingress along the supply cable. The supply cable enters through a gland on the enclosure bottom or rear face (a rear entry option with a gasket is available for mounting on a flat surface where bottom entry is not possible). The socket terminal connections accept copper conductors up to 16 sq mm (63A models), and the earth terminal is clearly identified with the IEC 60417 symbol for protective earth.
