Ask a QuoteA push button control station is an enclosure housing control devices (push buttons, selector switches, indicator lights) that provides the local operator interface for machine and process control. The operator presses a START button to initiate a machine cycle, an emergency STOP button to halt the machine in a hazardous situation, and a selector switch to choose between automatic and manual modes. The IP65 enclosure protects the control devices and wiring terminations from water, dust, impact and chemicals, making the station suitable for direct mounting on machinery in wash-down, outdoor and dirty industrial environments without an additional protective cabinet. This selection guide covers control element types, configuration, enclosure rating and application.
Momentary push buttons (spring-return) are used for START, JOG and INCH functions, where the button must be held to maintain the action. Latching push buttons (push-on/push-off) are used for ON/OFF control where a maintained signal is required. Mushroom head push buttons (40mm diameter) are used for STOP and emergency stop functions, with the large head providing easy operation in an emergency. Selector switches provide maintained position selection (AUTO-OFF-MANUAL, LOCAL-REMOTE, FWD-OFF-REV) with 2 or 3 positions, available as maintained (stays in position) or spring-return (returns to center). LED pilot lights indicate the machine or process status: green for RUN, red for FAULT/STOP, yellow for WARNING, blue for auxiliary functions. All control elements have contact blocks rated for AC-15 (electromagnetic loads, 230V AC 3A making, 0.5A breaking).
The UKW5 emergency stop button complies with IEC 60947-5-5 and ISO 13850 for emergency stop devices. The button is a red mushroom head on a yellow background, with a positive-opening normally-closed contact that forces the contacts apart mechanically (not relying on spring force). The button latches in the STOP position when pressed and is reset by pulling (standard) or by a key (for security applications where only authorized personnel can reset the emergency stop). The emergency stop button should be wired into the machine’s safety circuit (safety relay or safety PLC) to achieve the required safety integrity level (SIL) or performance level (PL) per ISO 13849-1. The UKW5 enclosure provides a clear, accessible and protected location for the emergency stop button, with a yellow background plate to identify the emergency stop function.
The UKW5 enclosure is molded from glass-fiber reinforced polyamide (PA6-GF30) with a silicone gasket between the cover and the base, achieving an IP65 rating per IEC 60529 when the cover screws are tightened to the specified torque. The IP65 rating means the enclosure is dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets, suitable for hose-down cleaning in food processing and pharmaceutical facilities. Each control element is individually sealed to the enclosure cover with an O-ring gasket. The cable entry is via IP68 glands on the enclosure bottom face, and the enclosure includes a separate earth terminal for the supply earth conductor with continuity to the metal parts of the control devices. Unused cable entry holes are sealed with blanking plugs.
KRIPAL UKW5 control stations are factory-configured to the customer’s specification: the required control elements are assembled into the enclosure cover, the contact blocks are fitted, and the wiring is pre-terminated to a terminal strip inside the enclosure base. The customer specifies the control element arrangement (from left to right on a single-row station, or in a matrix for multi-row stations), the contact configuration for each element (1NO, 1NC, 1NO+1NC), and the labeling (laser-engraved legend plates with text such as START, STOP, AUTO, MANUAL). A wiring diagram is supplied inside the enclosure and a copy is shipped with the unit. Pre-wired control stations reduce on-site installation time by eliminating the need to wire individual control elements and reducing the risk of wiring errors.
KRIPAL UKW5 push button control stations provide the local operator interface for machines and processes in environments where a standard control panel would not survive. From the conveyor START/STOP station in a quarry to the pump control station in a wastewater treatment plant, the IP65 enclosure and robust control elements ensure reliable operation in harsh industrial conditions.
Quarry and mining conveyor systems use UKW5 stations with START, STOP and EMERGENCY STOP buttons at each conveyor drive, transfer point and tail end. The IP65 enclosure protects against rock dust, water spray from dust suppression systems, and impacts from falling material. The emergency stop button is wired into the conveyor safety circuit to provide the E-stop function required by AS 4024 in Australia or ISO 13850 internationally.
Water and wastewater treatment plants use UKW5 stations with AUTO-OFF-HAND selector switches and RUN/FAULT pilot lights for pump local control. The AUTO position enables remote control from the SCADA system, OFF disables the pump for maintenance, and HAND starts the pump locally for testing. The IP65 enclosure withstands the high humidity and occasional spray in pump stations.
Food processing machines use UKW5 stations with stainless steel legend plates and silicone-sealed buttons for wash-down areas. The IP65 enclosure withstands daily cleaning with hot water and detergent, and the smooth enclosure surfaces prevent food particle accumulation. The control elements are color-coded: green START, red STOP, yellow RESET.
CNC machines, presses and fabrication equipment use UKW5 stations with START, CYCLE START, FEED HOLD and EMERGENCY STOP buttons. The large mushroom-head emergency stop button is the most prominent element, positioned for rapid operation by the machine operator in an emergency. The station is mounted on the machine frame at a convenient height for the operator.
Grain handling, feed milling and irrigation systems use UKW5 stations for equipment control in dusty, high-humidity agricultural environments. The station provides the local START/STOP and emergency stop function required by agricultural machinery safety regulations.
KRIPAL push button control stations are manufactured in a dedicated assembly cell where the IP65/IP66 enclosure, control elements (push buttons, selector switches, pilot lights), and internal wiring are configured to customer specifications. Each control station passes an 8-point quality inspection including wiring continuity, dielectric test, and actuator function verification for global industrial machine control and conveyor system applications.
Enclosures are CNC-machined for standard 22mm control element mounting holes with precise center-to-center spacing. The drilled holes are deburred and the sealing surface is verified flat to within 0.1mm to ensure the control element’s O-ring seal achieves IP65 or IP66 rating. The number of holes (1 to 6 stations) is configured per customer order.
Push buttons, emergency stop mushrooms, selector switches, and pilot lights are fitted with their individual sealing gaskets and torqued to the manufacturer’s specified mounting nut torque. Each mounted control element is tested for its IP sealing integrity at the element-to-enclosure interface using a localized water-spray test on sample assemblies.
Control stations are wired with color-coded flexible copper conductors (1.5 sq mm minimum), terminated with crimped ferrule connectors. Each wire termination is identified with a numbered sleeve corresponding to the wiring diagram. The terminal block is Din-rail mounted with adequate wiring space per IEC 60947-1 requirements for bend radius and access.
Every control station undergoes: (1) visual inspection of enclosure and labeling, (2) wiring continuity test per the circuit diagram, (3) dielectric withstand at 2500V AC, (4) actuator mechanical function test, (5) emergency stop positive opening mechanism verification, (6) contact block electrical function, (7) earth continuity test, and (8) IP rating sealing verification on the assembled unit.
