Project Background

With over 80 gigawatts of installed solar capacity across Germany, the Energiewende has transformed the country’s energy landscape. As PV systems age and new installations continue, safety requirements under VDE and IEC standards have become increasingly stringent. DC voltages in modern string configurations routinely reach 1500V, requiring isolator switches specifically engineered for DC switching.

The Engineering Challenge

A persistent challenge in the PV industry is the use of AC rated switches de-rated and re-wired for DC applications. AC switches are not designed to handle the continuous arc behavior of DC circuits. When a de-rated AC switch interrupts a DC circuit under load, the sustained arc causes progressive contact damage, increasing resistance and creating a fire risk over time.
